LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane is set for a return to English Premier League, according to Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni.
The MLS season is about to finish and the veteran striker could be set for a short-term loan to Aston Villa in January.
Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni admits Keane asked him for an opinion on the matter.
“Robbie spoke to me about this situation, after last month’s game in the Faroes,” Trapattoni was quoted as saying in Daily Mirror. “If he has this opportunity, it’s his decision. He has to make up his own mind.
“But in life it’s very important to have new challenges and if it suits him, it’ll be an injection for him.”
Ireland’s 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign resumes in March and the Italian boss would rather his star striker stays fit by playing for Villa.
The 32-year-old already enjoyed a loan spell at Villa Park last season, when he scored 3 goals in 6 Premier League appearances.
Should Keane decide to accept Villa’s offer, he would arrive in great shape, having bagged 20 goals in 32 league games for LA Galaxy.
