It looks as though Hull City are set to lose top scorer Robert Snodgrass in the near future.
The Tigers have accepted £10million bids from West Ham and Burnley according to Sky Sports. The Scotland international’s future at the club has been in doubt for a while.
Snodgrass’ contract with the Tigers was due to expire in the summer. However, the club activated a clause to extend his contract until 2018. All that is likely to do is help the club pick up a bigger transfer fee for the former Leeds star.
Hull will majorly miss Snodgrass
Robert Snodgrass has been one of the few success stories for Hull of late. The winger has scored nine goals this season, at times dragging his team to points.
His ability from set-pieces has been a big talking point. Snodgrass has scored some superb free-kicks of late, including a fantastic effort in a 2-2 draw at home against Everton.
It will not just be his goals and his set-piece ability that the Tigers will miss. Snodgrass works hard for the team and is a player who gives the team quality on the ball. The winger had made it clear that he would not sign a new deal with the Tigers. That means his exit is not a big surprise.
Unsurprisingly Snodgrass is in-demand, with Middlesbrough also believed to be interested in signing the star apart from Burnley and West Ham.
Hull need to sell to buy
Hull boss Marco Silva has made no secret of the fact that the Tigers have very little money to spend this month. The signings he has made of the likes of Oumar Niasse, Lazar Markovic and Evandro have been loan deals or in Evandro’s case a small fee.
The Tigers have already sold central midfielder Jake Livermore to West Brom for a fee of £10million. Livermore was arguably one of Hull’s best players. Snodgrass is another, so £20million for their two best players is not a great amount.
The Tigers have hardly spent any money in January so far. If that carries on in a similar vein then fans are going to be very angry with the club’s hierarchy. If the club fails to spend any money then it will feel like the owners have sold the club up the river.
Surely Hull would have a better chance of surviving relegation with Snodgrass and Livermore in their team, especially if the club fails to bring in any recognised quality this month. The Tigers lacked quality at the start of the campaign, selling Livermore and Snodgrass will only make the situation worse.
Odds against Hull surviving the drop
At the moment the odds are against Hull surviving the drop this season with the Tigers now odds of 1/ 4 to be relegated this season. Tigers boss Marco Silva knew the odds were against him keeping them up when he arrived. The sale of star player Robert Snodgrass will only increase the likelihood of the Tigers going down this season.
Silva is obviously keen on strengthening his squad before the transfer window shuts next Tuesday. However, it seems unlikely that the Portuguese boss will be able to bring in much quality with the small amount of cash available to him in January.
Robert Snodgrass is no doubt the Tigers key player. It is hard to see the Tigers being able to replace him and strengthen in other areas in the short space of time left in January.
Just like in the summer, most of the Tigers signings are mediocre. The club from Humberside have taken a gamble on them. Unfortunately for them it that sort of lack of ambition and investment that has probably led to Snodgrass’ likely exit in the near future.
Could selling Robert Snodgrass dent Hull’s chances of survival?
