Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has hailed his club’s ability to dominate the English Premier League, but also was adamant that City’s success to this point would mean nothing if they are not crowned EPL champions in May.
City are coming off of an easy 3-0 win versus Stoke City at Etihad Stadium, which kept them two points clear of bitter rivals Manchester United, who defeated Fulham 5-0 at Craven Cottage.
Subsequently, City will be sitting atop the English Premier League table come Christmas morning. Perhaps that is the best gift of all for City’s supporters.
“I’m happy for our supporters that we are top at Christmas,” Mancini said.
“They can have a good Christmas day but the important thing is to be there at the end of the season.
“Now is a difficult moment, we need to work more and believe in ourselves. Until now we have dominated this championship and for this reason we will work until the end.
“I’m happy. I’m feeling good after two years here. We are working very well and are at the top of the Barclays Premier League.
“It’s important that we can continue to win at home. Being unbeaten at home this year is a good record but it’s not that important.
“We are playing very well at the moment but sometimes it’s not enough, like against Chelsea. The Barclays Premier League is very hard, it’s very difficult.”
The Italian manager was also quick to praise his side’s patience versus Stoke City, who basically played with nine men behind the ball for ninety minutes.
“It’s never easy,” Mancini added.
“In the first 30 minutes it was difficult to find a goal but we produced a good performance. I think that all the players played very well.
“Sergio scored the first goal, which was very important as Stoke put all their players behind the ball.”
City have truly been on top form thus far, tallying an astounding 44 points through the first 17 games of the 2011-12 Premier League season.
Of their 17 matches, City have won 14, drawn two, and lost just one.
Their record is truly mesmerizing, but the best part is that they are winning in style. City have netted a Premier League leading 53 goals, while conceding just 15.
The next highest scoring team in Premier League is Manchester United, who have bagged a mere 42 goals.
It could be a title race for the ages, but the Manchester team in blue are surely the favorites at the moment.
Happy Holidays!
