Following the Gunners comeback victory versus Norwich City on Saturday, Arsenal skipper Robin van Persie seemed rather confident that his side were top four, i.e. UEFA Champions League, material.
“It’s a very welcome (achievement),” the Dutch talisman told Sky Sports 2.
“We know Norwich away is a tough game and we’ve seen this season they’ve been playing really well at times. We knew it would be a hard task but we played well.
“I think we missed a few too many chances and made it a bit difficult for ourselves.
“I should have had at least one more goal. I had four or five chances, I put two in – which is okay but not great, so I have to work on that.
“Our aim is to finish in the top four. I’m confident we can achieve that.”
In addition, Arsene Wenger squashed rumours suggesting that 2011-12 would be his last season in charge of the Gunners following his side’s 2-1 win over Norwich.
“I am completely committed to this club. It is the club of my life,” Wenger told Sky Sports 2.
“It was a conversation where I said that if you don’t do well enough, that is the only way I would consider (it) – if I am below what is expected of the club.”
“We have shown our mental strength again today.
“It’s down to team attitude and confidence, as well. There is a good attitude and spirit in the squad.”
There is no question that the Gunners are surging to the top of the English Premier League table. They are undoubtedly the second hottest team in the Premier League, just a tad behind Manchester City.
Despite picking Newcastle United as the dark horse to qualify for the Champions League prior to the season starting, I fully expect the Gunners to finish in the top four this season.
Unlike most, I was not surprised by the Gunners horrendous start to the new campaign.
That being said, I also could not foresee their magnificent resurgence.
Robin van Persie has been in absolutely scintillating form as of late…and that’s an understatement.
At the moment, Van Persie is surely the front-runner for the Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year Award.
I would also argue that Arsene Wenger deserves the FA Premier League Manager of the Year Award.
2011-12 has been the Frenchman’s second best season, managing-wise, with the Gunners. The first, do you recall “The Invincibles”.
In the end, this will add up to yet another top four finish for Arsene Wenger and the Gunners.
