Robson faces cancer battle

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson faces a battle against cancer after undergoing an operation to remove a tumour.

The current coach of Thailand, Robson, 54, underwent surgery in a Bangkok hospital earlier this month.

He took over from Peter Reid as Thailand boss in September 2009.

“Bryan Robson underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his throat on March 3, 2011 in a hospital in Bangkok,” a Manchester United club statement said.

“The laboratory report revealed a cancerous tumour, which will need further treatment. The oncologist is confident that the condition is treatable.”

“At this moment, Bryan is fine to continue with his role as Thailand coach and his role as ambassador of Manchester United.”

“Bryan and family have requested that he can continue with his treatment in private and ask that their privacy is respected.”

Robson was capped 90 times by England, 60 as skipper.

He often battled injury to play a role for the national team, earning the nickname ‘Captain Marvel’ from coach Sir Bobby Robson.

The midfielder began his playing career with West Bromwich Albion before moving to United in 1981.

He won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one league cup and one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup during 13 years with the club.

Robson managed Middlesbrough, Bradford, West Brom and Sheffield United with mixed results before being appointed Thailand coach.

He failed to guide the team to the 2011 Asian Cup and also presided over a group-stage exit from the 2010 AFF Cup.
