Dutch second division outfit Fortuna Sittard and top flight side Roda JC Kerkrade have been forced to merge because of respective financial difficulties, the clubs announced Wednesday.
It is hoped the merger will boost finances by 20 million euros, in turn raising expectations for success on the field – and ultimately entry to European competition.
The new club will play as of next season out of Roda’s Parkstad stadium in Kerkrade, in the Limburg region.
The Fortuna Stadion will be used as a youth training centre for the first division club.
