A double strike from Wigan’s Colombian international Hugo Rodallega saw them to a 3-1 victory here on Saturday and ended Burnley’s unbeaten home record this season.
Burnley, who have broken the mould with respect to newly-promoted clubs having become the first side to win their first four home matches, took an early lead as Steven Fletcher slid the ball home via the crossbar from a superb Robbie Blake cross for his fifth of the season.
However, Wigan composed themselves and hit back in the 11th minute as their Dutch captain Mario Melchiot crossed the ball in.
Melchiot, who had just had a shot saved, was helped by the fact that Burnley’s goalkeeper Brian Jensen slipped as he was coming for the ball and Rodallega struck the ball into the empty net for his fourth goal of the season.
Jensen, who was the only player on either side to have played in their previous encounter five years ago, injured himself in the process and was replaced by Peruvian Diego Penny.
Wigan came out fighting in the second-half and were rewarded as Rodallega rounded off a fine move with his second in the 51st minute with a long range effort from outside the area.
Burnley sparked up with that reverse and forced former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland into two saves from Cameroon international Andre Bikey and Graham Alexander.
However, in spite of their efforts it was Wigan who struck again in the 76th minute as Emmerson Boyce seized on Austrian Paul Scharner’s header from a corner and slotted into the goal.
