Manager Brendan Rodgers was thrilled with Liverpool’s tactical versatility after his side’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City.
Despite conceding an equaliser to Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez after a suicidal back pass from Martin Skrtel, Rodgers preferred to focus on his side’s ability to adapt to the reigning English Premier League champions.
Rodgers rated his team as ‘outstanding’ on Sunday.
“We prepared for 4-3-2-1 and 3-5-2 but until you’re on the field playing against the movement; I think once we organised that, I thought tactically the players were terrific,” Rodgers said.
“We’re obviously disappointed not to win the game but there were a lot of young players giving us great hope for the future and the fight and the quality that we played with today and the atmosphere was incredible.
“So we were disappointed not to win but we got a point and we move on.”
Manchester City’s Roberto Mancini believed his team could have wrapped up the match in the opening half hour against Liverpool.
Tevez hit the post from a ridiculous angle but the visitors could not score and then Skrtel’s header from a corner after 33 minutes put Liverpool ahead.
“I think we played very, very well in the first 30 minutes and we had three or four chances,” Mancini said.
“I think in that moment you should score if you want to win a game here in Liverpool because it’s Anfield so the game is always difficult, instead we conceded a goal on a corner and the game was changed.”
After going behind twice in the game, the Italian manager was just happy to take a point home to Manchester.
“We want to win – it’s clear,” Mancini said.
“Every team wants to win but we went down 1-0 down, 2-1 down.
“We didn’t deserve to lose this game because we played well and in the end it was a good result.”
