Brendan Rodgers is refusing to celebrate Swansea’s Premier League survival until the club are mathematically safe.
The Welsh club overcame a lacklustre Blackburn side on Saturday at the Liberty Stadium, with goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson, Nathan Dyer and an own goal from Scott Dann helping them to an emphatic 3-0 victory.
The win moves Rodgers’ side on to 42 points for the season and stops a run of four defeats in a row.
Despite passing the 40-point barrier, Rodgers is refusing to accept his club are set for another season in the top flight.
When asked if he would be celebrating his side’s safety, Rodgers told Sky Sports: “Not until it’s mathematically safe.
“Once you arrive at 39 points as a newly promoted team in the middle of March, the finish line is very close so maybe that was something the players were subconsciously aware of.”
Swansea’s debut season in the Premier League has seen the side lauded for their attractive play and home form.
Despite a successful first campaign in the league, Rodgers is refusing to rest on his laurels and says the side want to finish as high up the league as possible.
“We’ve got 42 points but we don’t want to finish on that, we’ve got four more games to go and our only concentration now is to recover well and look to Bolton next week.”
Blackburn boss Steve Kean was also playing the numbers game after Saturday’s match, and the Scot believes his side must win two and draw one of their remaining four games to stand any chance of avoiding relegation.
Rovers, who have not been out of the Premier League since promotion from the Championship in 2000/01, are entrenched in 19th place on 28 points.
The Lancashire club are three points from safety and have away games at Tottenham and Chelsea still to come.
“We’ll have to win two games and get a draw from somewhere,” Kean said.
“It is obvious what we have to do. We have to win our next game.”
“It’s as simple as that.”
