Manchester City were rumoured to be following Rodri from Atletico Madrid as their potential new signing and heir to Fernandinho in defensive midfield. There were talks of 70 million pounds being offered to Los Colchoneros, but maybe even more important were the words from Enrique Cerezo, club’s president, following Antoine Griezmann’s expected departure.
When asked about the Rodri rumours, he said: “Today… today, Rodrigo is an Atletico player. But if tomorrow he has an offer and wants to go…”
Then Cerezo continued talking about Griezmann and the situation at the club, which is obviously far from a good one.
“[Diego] Simeone is disappointed, like the others. He was determined to leave and there was no chance of convincing him. I don’t know or care [who Griezmann’s next team will be]. But when a team wants to pay a release clause, it’s normal to communicate [your intention to do so] and we haven’t received any messages from anyone just yet.”
Maybe this will leave the doors open for Manchester City to swoop in for Rodri.
