AS Roma have held talks with the representatives of Tottenham Hotspur’s Jan Vertonghen over a possible free transfer this summer as his contract expires at the end of this month, according to Italian publication Il Messaggero.
The Belgian defender arrived to north London in 2012 from Ajax for a reported fee of €12.5 million. Though the club failed to win any trophies since then, he was a big part of the revolution under the command of Mauricio Pochettino between 2014 and 2019, which culminated in reaching the Champions League final last year. Overall, he has so far made 311 appearances for Spurs in all competitions, finding the opposition net 14 times. A highly versatile defender, the 33-year-old mostly plays as a centre-back, but he can do well as a left back or a defensive midfielder.
Roma still haven’t been able to secure the services of Chris Smalling, currently on loan there from Manchester United, for next season. They’ve been interested in Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren too, but it seems going for Vertonghen on a free transfer makes the most sense for the Serie A side.
