According to a recent report from Corriere dello Sport, Italian side Roma are going after Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos this summer.
The news comes in the wake of their failure to complete the signing of Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, with the England international’s future now looking even more uncertain than ever before.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta clearly wants to build this squad in a way that suits his vision of the direction that the club is going in, and there’s a good chance Sokratis may not have a role to play under the Spaniard.
The 32-year-old has been at the Emirates since back in 2018 when he made the jump over from Borussia Dortmund, and while he has certainly had his fair share of ups and downs with the Gunners, one has to wonder where this is going to leave them in terms of defensive reinforcements ahead of the new season.
