AS Roma and Juventus are locked in the battle for River Plate defender Eder Alvarez Balanta, Il Corriere dello Sport has learned.
The Giallorossi plan to sign a new central defender even if they manage to keep hold of Mehdi Benatia, and they are currently in talks with Lille over Marko Basa.
But, should they fail to lure the Montenegrin to Stadio Olimpico, Roma officials will step up their interest in long-term target Eder Balanta.
After impressing for River Plate in Argentine elite division, the Colombian is widely tipped to join a top European club this summer.
However, Roma could face a stiff competition for the player’s signature from Juventus, who see Balanta as a good long-term replacement for Andrea Barzagli.
The 21-year-old, who can also play at left-back and in holding midfield, has made one appearance for Colombia at the 2014 World Cup, playing full 90 minutes in the 4-1 triumph over Japan.
