According to a recent report from Gazzetta dello Sport, Italian giants Roma are preparing to put forward a €17 million package in an attempt to permanently sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling in 2021.
It seems all but certain that they won’t be able to get a deal over the finish line between now and next season, with the Englishman being all set to return to Old Trafford at the end of his current loan spell. Alas, given how impressive he’s been in Serie A, it makes sense that Roma won’t want to give up all that easily.
United’s defensive issues have been well documented over the course of the last few years, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanting to bring in someone to serve as Harry Maguire’s long-term centre back partner. Whether or not Smalling fits the bill remains to be seen, but either way, we can expect the Red Devils to be busy this summer.
