Portuguese media outlet A Bola has learned that AS Roma are stepping up their efforts to sign Uruguayan defender Maxi Pereira from Benfica.
The Giallorossi see the 30-year-old as a perfect replacement for veteran Douglas Maicon and are determined to lure him to Stadio Olimpico at the end of the season.
With Maxi Rodriguez’s deal at Estadio da Luz due to expire in June, Roma have informed the Uruguayan they are ready to offer him a significant pay rise in an attempt to secure his signature.
The Uruguayan was believed to be open to staying with the Eagles, but the offer from Italy may prove too good to turn down.
Maxi Pereira has been an integral part of the squad at Estadio da Luz ever since he joined from Defensor Sporting back in 2007, and he has so far amassed 202 league appearances, scoring 11 goals.
The reliable full-back has also earned 99 Uruguay caps and it is hardly surprising he is on the radar of the Italian giants.
