According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas and club owner Roman Abramovich were “locked in talks” at Chelsea’s on Saturday.
Reports have suggested that Abramovich turned up unannounced and watched the Blues train prior to Sunday’s clash with Manchester United.
The Russian billionaire watched 35 minutes of training at Cobham before demanding to know Villas-Boas’ tactics for the United fixture.
After throwing away a 3-0 lead against the Red Devils, Andre Villas-Boas’ hot seat may have reached its melting point.
In fact, Abramovich went into the Blues dressing room after the Blues draw versus Manchester United and spent about half an hour talking to his players.
This report gives me the feeling that Villas-Boas’ days at Stamford Bridge are numbered.
Based on past history, the odds are stacked against Abramovich sticking with Villas-Boas.
The Russian owner has has no problem sacking managers, with Luiz Felipe Scolari (2009) and Carlo Ancelotti (2011) the latest bosses to be dismissed by the billionaire.
Subsequently, it should be much easier parting with Villas-Boas, who lacks the experience and expertise of Scolari and Ancelotti.
The only viable replacement for Chelsea seems to be Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho has repeatedly expressed his desire to return to England, and if Madrid can win the UEFA Champions League in 2012, I think that he could be on his way back to west London.
Let’s not forget that Mourinho left FC Porto after winning the Champions League in 2003-04 and that he left Inter Milan after winning the same competition in 2009-10.
The “Special One” won six trophies in his first stint with the Blues (2004-07), including: two Premier League titles, two League Cups, one FA Cup and one FA Community Shield.
Despite his great success in west London, he failed to win the UEFA Champions League, which owner Roman Abramovich has been craving for years.
Furthermore, the Portuguese has been linked with a return to the Blues in recent weeks.
All things considered, Andre Villas-Boas will likely take the fall for Chelsea’s disappointing 2011-12 campaign.
To be fair to AVB, his players have let him down this season.
Fernando Torres has been absolutely dreadful, while captain John Terry has not been the rock at the back of years past.
The outliers for Chelsea have been Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge, who have both been on good form in 2011-12.
Mata has bagged five goals and eight assists in 23 Premier League games, while Sturridge has tallied nine goals and two assists in 18 matches.
But two players can not win the Champions League or even a league title for that matter.
As a result, Roman Abramovich has quite the dilemma to deal with in the coming weeks.
Will Abramovich sack Andre Villas-Boas before the end of the Premier League season?
