According to a recent report from Sky Italy, Manchester United have turned down Roma’s offer to extend the loan spell of Chris Smalling for another season.
United recently gave the green light for the Englishman to carry on his tenure in Roma until the end of the currrent campaign, but right now, it doesn’t appear as if they’re all too interested in keeping that going into 2021 and beyond.
Anyone can see that Smalling has enjoyed something of a career resurgence in Rome, to the point where many felt as if it made sense for him to join them on a permanent basis. On the other hand, though, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clearly would’ve been keeping a close eye on proceedings.
The Red Devils have been suffering with defensive problems for a good few years now, and if they do end up bringing Smalling back into the first team squad next season, it could be a huge boost for their Premier League aspirations.
