Belgium international striker Romelu Lukaku has finally completed his £20million move to Chelsea from Belgian giants Anderlecht.
The Blues had been linked with a move for the 18 year-old ever since he broke into the Anderlecht first team at just 16.
Wonderkid
Lukaku is one of the most highly-rated youngsters in Europe and was also believed to be attracting the interest of Real Madrid and Arsenal.
Chelsea however were always the players first choice destination. Lukaku has been described as the new Didier Drogba, which will be a hard label to live up to. The 18 year-old is big, strong and fast. He is also extremely well built for a player of his age and his build will be ideal for the Premier League.
Dream
Lukaku has never hidden the fact that he is a big Chelsea fan. He told the clubs official website: “ It’s a dream come true,”
“I dreamed to play here since I was 10 years old, thinking about shaking hands with all those players like John Terry and Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, it’s amazing to arrive here in a big club with big ambition. It was just what I was searching for.”
Commenting on the comparison with Drogba he continued by saying: “ We have similar playing styles, but I am also very fast. I want to learn off him how it is to play here at the Bridge and how to prepare for games,”
Model
Lukaku couldn’t have a better striking role model than the Ivory Coast international. He has been one of the most dangerous strikers in the Premier League for a long time and I’m sure he has a lot of knowledge to impart in the youngster.
Lukaku will be regarded as Drogba’s long-term replacement, so will want to learn everything he can from the veteran striker. Not only could the youngster learn what to do from the Ivorian but also learn from Drogba’s mistakes.
Battle
Young Lukaku really does face a battle to get into the Chelsea first team this season. Chelsea already have Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka in the squad, not to mention winger Salomon Kalou who can play up front.
Then there is up and coming young English striker Daniel Sturridge, who impressed on-loan at Bolton in the second half of last season. There is a lot of competition for places in the Blues forward line. The question is how much time will the youngster get on the pitch this season?
I think this season will very much be a case of adapting to life and football in a new country for a very young man. He will no doubt get a few chances in the first team this season but I don’t think boss Andre Villas-Boas will put too much pressure on Lukaku.
Mature
From the quotes I have read from the youngster he seems a very mature and level headed young man. I might be wrong but he doesn’t seem big headed or arrogant. He will need a level head if he is going to be a success at Stamford Bridge.
Long-Term
Romelu Lukaku is very much a player for the long-term. However he will give boss Andre Villas-boas an extra attacking option this season. He definitely has all the attributes to be a world-class striker and even at £20million I’m sure the big striker will be a big success in the Premier League.
Is Romelu Lukaku a good signing for Chelsea?
