Romero backs ´great coach´ Postecoglou despite recent run

Cristian Romero has backed Ange Postecoglou to survive the pressure at Tottenham after their heavy defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

Spurs lost 4-3, having raced into a two-goal lead against the Blues thanks to goals from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski inside 11 minutes, but Chelsea then scored four goals without reply before Son Heung-min’s late strike.

It was the 11th time Tottenham lost a Premier League game after having been 2+ goals ahead – at least four more such defeats than any other side in the competition’s history.

Spurs have won just one of their last seven games in all competitions – a 4-0 victory at reigning champions Manchester City – and sit 11th in the table having lost their last two top-flight matches.

Postecoglou is the fifth manager, including caretakers, that Romero has played under since joining in August 2021, and he has confidence in the Australian.

“He’s a great coach. We saw it in the first season. In this second one, we’ve suffered a lot of injuries,” Romero told Telemundo.

“Players are the first ones to be criticised, then if we lose 10 games, the staff can be changed, but nobody talks about what is actually happening.

“We are very happy with this staff, me and my colleagues. We love how they work and the football they try to play. We’ll try to move on quickly.”

Postecoglou has a 49.06% win rate with Spurs in the Premier League, winning 26 of his 53 games in charge of the club, and averages 1.62 points per game.

In the 59-year-old’s first season in charge, Spurs finished fifth after making an impressive start to that campaign. However, the north London club are still yet to win a trophy since their EFL Cup success in 2008.
