Rooney appeal decision delayed

A decision on whether to appeal Wayne Rooney’s three-match suspension for England is to be delayed for at least another week.

Rooney was handed the ban after being sent off in England’s final Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro earlier this month.

The Football Association will not commit to an appeal because UEFA have stated that any written explanation of the forward’s ban will not be given for at least seven days.

The Manchester United striker, 26, is set to miss all three of England’s group stage games at next year’s finals if the suspension is not challenged.

However, an unsuccessful appeal could result in a one-game extension of the ban.

A statement on the FA’s website read: “The FA has today been advised by UEFA that we may not be provided with the written reasons regarding Wayne Rooney’s three match suspension for another week at a minimum.”

“Once the reasons are received, The FA will determine on any appeal after discussions with Fabio Capello and Wayne Rooney.”

England were undefeated in Euro 2012 qualifying and finished top of Group G.
