England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has suffered “minor ligament damage” and a scan of his injured ankle showed no fracture, his club said on Thursday.

“We’re pleased to report that Wayne has not suffered a fracture. The scan revealed only minor ligament damage,” a club spokeswoman told ManUtd.com, without saying how many games 24-year-old Rooney will miss.

The absence of a fracture appears to suggest Rooney should be able to play at this year’s World Cup finals in South Africa from June. He was injured in United’s Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich Tuesday.
