(GSM) – Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso believes Wayne Rooney is struggling to adapt to the international game as his poor performances for England continue. Rooney has had a disappointing World Cup campaign with England.
The media and fans were expecting Rooney to shine in South Africa, carrying his glorious club form to the World Cup. However, the 24-year-old forward has failed once again to make his mark on the international scene.
And Alonso, who moved from Liverpool to Real Madrid last season, feels that the England striker has not adapted successfully to the rhythm of international football after failing to score in all four games in the tournament.
Alonso explained to The Sunday Times: “In the Premier League his performances are staggering, spectacular. In the Champions League he is good, but less so. In the national team, he struggles rather more.
“It’s in the Premier League, where he is incredible, that he feels happiest.
“Since I joined Real (Madrid) a year ago I’ve been watching a lot of Premier League games at home on TV and I think to myself, ‘My God? What a rhythm they play at!’
“Maybe it’s hard for the English players to adapt to international football, to feel comfortable on the pitch. Watching England in this World Cup, my impression was that they struggled to enjoy the game.”
