Former England hero Paul Gascoigne says nobody can tame Wayne Rooney’s aggression and believes the striker will continue to see red cards.
Manchester United man Rooney was sent off for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic during the England’s final Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro last week.
The 25-year-old will miss at least the first game of next year’s tournament in Poland and Ukraine, and is facing a suspension of up to three games.
But Gascoigne is not overly worried by the sending-off, asking talkSPORT: “What has he done wrong?”
“I mean, okay, he got sent off, but it won’t be his first time and it’s not going be his last time.”
“It won’t be long before he’s captain. He’ll have to go to the Euros without a shadow of a doubt and I don’t think anyone in the country has a problem with that.”
“(England manager Fabio) Capello can’t get inside his head? Why do you want to get inside his head?”
Former Tottenham midfielder Gascoigne, 44, also believes that England need to show more vigour in attack, as well as learn how to protect a lead.
Capello’s side collapsed from a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with the Montenegrins.
“They don’t express themselves from the couple of games I’ve seen,” the 44-year-old continued.
“I can’t understand why the midfield players don’t run at the other midfielders. Take a little gamble, take a chance.”
“But I don’t know what Capello’s said in the dressing room – has he given the freedom that Terry Venables gave me? Or Walter Smith? You know, they gave me the freedom to play. I don’t know if they’re self-disciplined or by what he’s saying in the dressing room.”
“Capello’s record has been fantastic – it’s just when you see the big games we freeze.”
“If they’re 2-1 up, that game should be dead and buried. Just run the ball down, waste time, keep possession.”
“The foreigners are brilliant at doing it and we’re still not learning from the bad mistakes we’ve made in the past.”
