Liverpool has confirmed Roy Hodgson as their new manager. The former-Fulham boss had been linked with the post ever since Rafa Benitez left the Reds last month.
Hodgson has signed a three-year deal at Anfield and took his first training session today.
Experienced
The 62 year-old brings a wealth of experience to the job. He has managed all over the world in both international and club management.
He has managed in varying environments, helping him pick up new ideas and techniques.
Successful
Under Hodgson Fulham reached the Europa League last season against all odds. The Fulham side are a hardworking side but they haven’t got any outstanding individuals. However Hodgson’s tactical nous and motivation inspired the players to play at their best. His motivation skills will be vital in his new job.
Hodgson is a football man. He knows the game inside out and is revered within the game by his peers. He won LMA manager of the year and he has also worked for footballs governing body Fifa as a consultant.
Mess
Liverpool football club is in a mess. The ownership issue has become a major problem. The current Liverpool board and chairman Martin Broughton are currently looking for new owners but Broughton has admitted that the club have yet to receive any offers for the club.
The club may have a new manager but the ownership issue remains the same. Roy Hodgson will be in the same position that Rafa Benitez was in last summer. He won’t have much money to spend but he needs to heavily strengthen his squad.
Budget
Hodgson built a strong squad at Fulham within a tight budget. He may have moved to a higher profile club but he will still be working with a near empty transfer pot. If anybody can strengthen the Liverpool squad then it’s Roy Hodgson.
Hodgson at least has a decent squad and some players he can sell to raise extra transfer funds. After last season’s poor performance he really has a job on his hands and may need to have a clear out of some of Anfield’s deadwood.
Poison Chalice
Some say the Anfield job is a Poison Chalice. Hodgson in his press conference described the job as ‘the biggest in club football’. I would say it’s the hardest job in club football. Liverpool Football Club is one of the biggest clubs in the world.
They have a big reputation. However recently the fans have become frustrated by the lack of big trophies the Premier League title especially. They now have to be realistic and realise that the club can’t currently complete for the title.
The appointment has been met with mixed reactions by the Liverpool fans. Some fans believe that Hodgson will bring the stability that the club needs. Yet some think that he’s not a big enough name for the job.
Attraction
Those fans against his appointment have pointed to the fact that they don’t believe Hodgson can attract big names to Liverpool. Roy Hodgson is no mug and can probably sell the club to any prospective signing.
Anyway Liverpool should be a big enough name to attract players without their manager being a world famous name. In fact they are still an attractive destination even though they have struggled to achieve success in recent years. Attracting players won’t be an issue.
Stability
Roy Hodgson task as Liverpool manager will be to steady the ship in the next few years. I can’t see the veteran failing and he will do it with typical dignity and calm. Good Luck at Anfield Roy, I’m sure you’ll prove a big success.
