Southampton are ready to offer Jay Rodriguez a new five-year contract, according to the Mail Online.
The striker’s current deal expires at the end of next season and the South Coast club are keen to retain his services, with Tottenham Hotspur again keeping a close eye on his situation having been linked with a move for him in the close season.
The former Burnley man has been side-lined since April, when picked up a serious knee injury in a 4-1 defeat to would-be-champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium though he is expected to return to first team action next month.
Despite being without Rodriguez, Southampton have far exceeded all expectations so far this season, picking up twenty-five points from thirty-three available, a tally which sees them comfortably in second place, four behind leaders Chelsea.
Despite being tipped by some for relegation a few months ago, Ronald Koeman’s men can now be backed at 2/1 to finish in the top four.
