Bayern Munich executive director Matthias Sammer has claimed that Mario Gotze turned down “incredible offers” in order to join the club.
It emerged on Tuesday evening that the Bavarian outfit had met Borussia Dortmund’s 32 million pounds release clause with a move expected to be completed ahead of next season.
But Sammer insists that Bayern were not the only club chasing the Germany international.
He told Sky Deutschland: “You have to be aware that Mario Gotze has had incredible offers from other clubs. Those offers were really mad!”
Sammer also revealed that Bayern had not intended for the move to go public prior to their UEFA Champions League meeting with Barcelona, or indeed Dortmund’s clash with Real Madrid the following day.
He added: “Of course, the publication of this transfer has not been so ideal. We intended to go public with it just after the UEFA Champions League semi-final fixtures.
“We haven’t been in touch with Borussia Dortmund over it. Why should we? Mario Gotze has got a contract release clause and he is making use of it.”
Gotze has made 42 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side this term, scoring 16 goals.
