(GSM) – On Tuesday night, Sampdoria lost their Champions League spot in a real drama match against Werder Bremen. The Blucerchiati were leading 3-0 at the 92nd minute when Markus Rosenberg forced extra time. Claudio Pizarro crashed Samp’s Champions League dreams during extra time: 3-2.
The Italians were thought to be down and out after the first leg in Bremen, which they lost 3-1. However, at the own Luigi Ferraris Stadium they were already 2-0 up after thirteen minutes thanks to a brace from Giampaolo Pazzini. Antonio Cassano added to the joy with a clever back-heel goal just before the end of the match but the Germans kept believing in a positive outcome and they were rewarded for their confidence. Rosenberg and Pizarro secured Werder’s spot in the main tournament with Sampdoria ending up in the Europa League.
“If you are leading 3-0, then you have got to handle it better,” Sampdoria captain Angelo Palombo told Sky Sport Italia.
“Perhaps our fitness levels let us down. Bremen are an expert side and they struck right at the end.
“Experience really counts at this level and they have some great players.
“It’s a shame. It was a dream, but we’ll try again.”
