Schalke´s Streit earns second demotion

Schalke 04 coach Felix Magath suspended midfielder Albert Streit on Wednesday and relegated him to the reserve team for an indefinite period after displaying a poor attitude in training again.

“I require of players in my team that they work consistently hard and regularly push themselves to the limits: that is not the impression I had with Albert,” said Magath, who won the German league with Wolfsburg last season.

Schalke were shocked 1-0 by minnows Freiburg last Saturday and Magath is in no mood to tolerate any of his players not working hard.

Romanian-born Streit is under contract until 2012 and the 29-year-old has said he wants to see out his time in Gelsenkirchen.

“I have signed and I get the best contract of my life here,” he said.

But this is the second time this year that Streit has been relegated to the reserves after Magath’s predecessor Fred Rutten demoted him, Peter Loevenkrands and Carlos Grossmueller into the reserves for disciplinary reasons in January.

Both have since left the club – Grossmueller is on loan while Loevenkrands was sold to Newcastle United – with Streit as the only remaining rebel.
