(GSM) – Schalke 04 have confirmed their interest in signing Michael Ballack from Chelsea.

The Germany captain’s contract expires at the end of the season and it’s unlikely he will be offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge according to the News of the World.

Schalke coach Felix Magath has spoken openly about his desire to sign Ballack, even though the German side cannot match his current wages (£120,000-per-week).

“We are interested in signing Michael Ballack ,” Magath admitted.

“I’m confident that he’s ready to accept a pay cut if he decides to return to the Bundesliga.”

Ballack will captain his country at this summer’s World Cup. He arrived at Chelsea from Bayern München, four seasons ago.
