German Bundesliga side Schalke 04 have confirmed their interest in Tottenham playmaker Rafael van der Vaart.
The Dutch international is still considered an important player at White Hart Lane, but he is not too happy with the way boss Harry Redknapp is treating him.
The 29-year-old has been substituted in 20 of his 28 Premier League starts last season and he is growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of confidence shown in his abilities.
As a result, the Dutchman has been linked with a summer exit from White Hart Lane, with a return to Bundesliga the most likely possibility.
Schalke boss Huub Stevens has now confirmed the Miners are interested in signing Van der Vaart.
“His qualities are extraordinary. Schalke couldn’t say now to Rafael,” Stevens told Voetbal International.
The Belgian coach explained that initial contacts had been established.
“I know him from our time at Hamburger SV and would love to work with him. We have contacts with his agent.”
Van der Vaart has been one of the star performers for Tottenham this season, having scored 11 goals and produced 7 more in 33 Premier League games.
