Bundesliga outfit Schalke have rubbished reports linking Cameroon defender Joel Matip with a January switch to Liverpool.
The English media had suggested that the Reds were keen on luring the 24-year-old to Anfield, looking to take advantage of the fact that the stopper’s deal is due to expire in June.
However, despite the fact that contract extension talks have not progressed according to plan, the Miners chief Horst Heldt is adamant that they have received no offers for Matip up to date.
“There have been no requests. Also, Joel has no plans to leave the club in the winter,” Heldt told reporters at a press conference.
“It that were the case, we would vehemently prevent it.”
Heldt went on to add that the situation was the same with Sead Kolasinac, who has been heavily linked with a January move to AS Roma.
It is hardly surprising that Europe’s top clubs are casting admiring glances towards Joel Matip, considering that he has been putting in some strong performances in German Bundesliga for several years now, while scoring 16 goals in 176 league outings.
