Sporting Life are reporting this morning that Schalke are looking to secure the signatures of Rafael Van der Vaart and Salomon Kalou this summer.
After finishing 3rd in the Bundesliga last season, the German club are determined to challenge for the title next year and this means adding to their squad.
Manager Huub Stevens appears to have made Van der Vaart and Kalou his main two targets and speculation suggests he could make an approach this month.
Speaking about Tottenham’s Van der Vaart, Stevens said that he is a player with ‘unprecedented’ qualities and someone he would like to work with again having managed him at Hamburg.
With this one, much depends on the player’s intentions. He has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane a few times this summer, it just depends whether he is ready for a new challenge as yet.
As for Kalou, his contract at Stamford Bridge runs out at the end of June meaning that he will be looking for a new club as things stand.
In terms of Stevens’ opinion of the Ivory Coast international, the Schalke boss said: “I know for sure he wants to move away from England.”
He also mentioned Liverpool as a potential interested party, but it appears Stevens fancies his chances of completing a deal for Kalou.
As ever with transfer speculation, it is a case of having to wait and see.
