Schalke eyeing second division striker

German daily newspaper Bild has suggested that Schalke are considering a summer bid for Fortuna Dusseldorf striker Charlison Benschop.

The Miners need to sign a back-up to Klaas Jan Huntelaar and the 25-year-old is one of the players they are looking at.

And even though the Dutch forward has a contract until June 2017, it is believed that his release clause stands at mere €1.5 million.

Benschop began his career with RKC Waalwijk and he earned a move to AZ Alkmaar after a promising debut season in Dutch Eredivisie.

The forward also represented Brest in French Ligue 1 before arriving in Dusseldorf, where he has been playing the best football of his career.

Benschop went on to score 25 goals in 53 league appearances for Fortuna, catching the eye of top German clubs in the process.

He now appears to be on the verge of a summer switch to Schalke although few more Bundesliga sides might join the race for his signature.
