Schalke CEO Clemens Tonnies said the club is waiting for Raul to respond to their new contract offer, with the deal’s length a sticking point.
The 34-year-old striker has been an ever-present figure in Schalke’s attack since he arrived at the club in 2010, but doubts remain about his future in Gelsenkirchen as he enters the final months of his contract.
Schalke are interested in extending Raul’s contract until 2013, while the former Real Madrid ace is keen on a two-year deal.
“We have made him a really good offer, and I believe that the lack of progress is not about his salary, but the length of the contract,” Tonnies told Sport1.
“Now it is up to him to decide.”
The Schalke chief also commented on the situation of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who the club are keen to hold on to after his contract expires in 2013.
“We will honour his accomplishments with the club and we want to keep him as well,” Tonnies said.
“He is now playing at a club where he can win titles.”
