Bundesliga giants Schalke missed out on signing VFB Stuttgart winger Filip Kostic on transfer deadline day, Bild has suggested.
The Miners were looking to sign a replacement for Wolfsburg-bound Julian Draxler and they opted to make a move on the Serbia international.
Schalke officials hoped the deal would go ahead after agreeing personal terms with the player, but Stuttgart coach Robin Dutt ultimately vetoed the sale.
The former Bayer Leverkusen boss did not want to stay without one of his key men and the club chiefs decided to stand behind him on this very important matter.
Having kept hold of both Kostic and Didavi, the Swabians will be desperate to show some improvement on the previous season, when they narrowly avoided the drop.
This season did not start well either for Stuttgart, who sit deep in the relegation zone after losing all three Bundesliga fixtures so far, conceding 10 goals in the process.
