Schalke have offered Raul a 12-month contract extension despite the Spanish striker holding out for a two-year deal.
The former Real Madrid frontman has been a success since joining the Bundesliga club in 2010, having netted 11 goals in 24 Bundesliga appearances this campaign..
Schalke want to cut Raul’s wages as they are unable to keep paying him his current annual salary of around seven million euros.
If the 34-year-old does not re-sign he’ll have plenty of other options, with clubs from the United States to the Middle East interested in his services.
Schalke director Clemens Tonnies confirmed the one-year extension to his current contract, which expires at the end of the season.
“We have made him a good offer for one season. It’s now up to him to make a decision. We expect a decision in the upcoming weeks,” Tonnies told Sky.
However, it remains to be seen if Raul will accept Schalke’s latest contract offer as the veteran had set his sights on an extension that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2014 instead.
