Bundesliga giants Schalke have confirmed they made an official approach for German striker Lukas Podolski.
The Miners were thought to be among the clubs interested in the highly rated forward when he revealed plans to leave Koln, but the rumours never received official confirmation.
Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt has now confessed to Sport Bild that they have contacted the player’s representatives.
“Of course we have contacted his people. We have informed his agent Kon Schramm of our interest,” Heldt was quoted as saying.
“Soon it was clear that Poldi wouldn’t remain in Bundesliga. So we were out of the race.”
Podolski ultimately decided to accept an offer from Arsenal and has made a bright start to his career at the Emirates.
The 27-year-old has started all eight Premier League games for the Gunners this term and scored two goals in the process.
Prior to joining the North London club, Podolski enjoyed two spells with FC Koln and also spent three seasons at Bayern Munich.
While somewhat struggling to fulfill his potential at club level, the player has scored 44 goals in 105 Germany caps.
