Schalke chief Horst Heldt has confirmed that the club are closing in on former Germany international Timo Hildebrand.
The Bundesliga side have just been informed that first choice keeper Ralf Fahrmann is set to miss next three months of action.
With veteran Mathias Schober and youngster Lars Unnerstall having just one league game between them during the last three years, the club chiefs have started the search for a new keeper.
Schalke have already opened negotiations for former Stuttgart goalie Timo Hildebrand, who has been a free agent since leaving Sporting Lisbon this summer.
“Yes, we are seriously and intensively negotiating with Timo Hildebrand,” Schalke chief Horst Heldt told Bild.
“He has a lot of experience, is in good age for goalkeepers and knows the league…”
Hildebrand has been staying fit during last few weeks with Eintracht Frankfurt and he will now jump at the opportunity to return to the big stage.
