German daily Bild is reporting that Schalke are weighing up bid for Basel midfielder Valentin Stocker.
The alarm bells are on following a 1-1 home draw against PAOK in the Champions League play-off first leg, with the team in desperate need of attacking reinforcements.
Michel Bastos’ departure and Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s injury have created extra problems for the Miners, who are now keen to sign at least one more attack-minded player.
And while Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski doesn’t seem to be a realistic target, Schalke are turning their attention to Basel winger Valentin Stocker.
The Bundesliga side hope they can wrap up the deal for the Swiss midfield maestro for €4 million, but it remains to be seen whether the player’s employers will be prepared to let him go with the season already underway.
Stocker, 24, has already bagged no less than 37 goals in 146 league appearances for Basel and it appears he is more than ready for the next step in his career.
