Schalke win race for Barnetta

German newspaper Kicker reports that Schalke are set to complete the signing of Tranquillo Barnetta from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Swiss winger has been a free agent since his contract at BayArena expired last month and he has now decided to accept an offer from Schalke.

According to Kicker, the highly rated midfielder has already passed a medical at Veltins Arena and is set to sign a three-year deal with the Miners.

Schalke have been looking for attacking reinforcements ever since it became clear that Raul Gonzalez will leave the club.

Huub Stevens tried to sign both Eljero Elia and Salomon Kalou, but was unable to persuade either of the two players to join the Miners.

Nevertheless, he has now signed a great player in Tranquillo Barnetta and his arrival increased the chances of keeping Klaas Jan Huntelaar at the club.

The Swiss international has scored 25 goals and produced another 39 assists in 187 Bundesliga games for Bayer Leverkusen.
