Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger faces an extensive stint on the sidelines, after incurring ligament damage to his ankle on Wednesday.
The Germany international was substituted in the 17th minute of Bayern’s 2-0 DFB Pokal quarter-final win over Stuttgart, and scans have revealed he has torn the anterior exterior ligament in his right ankle.
Schweinsteiger – who had only returned recently from a shoulder injury – had his injured ankle put in plaster, and club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt said they would announce Schweinsteiger’s prognosis soon.
“We’ll issue an estimate of when Bastian should be able to train and play again at a later date,” Muller-Wohlfahrt told the club’s official website.
