With all eyes falling on Hampden on Tuesday night, England put in an eye-catching performance as they landed a 3-1 victory against British rivals Scotland.
Met by a fiery home support in Glasgow on what was the 150th anniversary of their first meeting, Gareth Southgate’s side certainly came flying out of the traps and claimed a much-welcomed immediate boost on foreign soil.
With Manchester City superstar Phil Foden opening the scoring just after the half-hour mark, England didn’t take their foot off of the accelerator as the red-hot Jude Bellingham doubled Southgate’s lead just three minutes later.
Although half-time substitute Harry Maguire might have turned into his own net midway through the second-half, England wrapped up a deserved victory just nine minutes before the end as Harry Kane produced a slick finish past Angus Gunn.
While Scotland might have eventually missed out on the chance to claim a first victory against the Three Lions since way back in 1999, the Tartan Army have once again impressed during this month’s fortnight break.
In what was a lively affair from Hampden on Tuesday night, we have taken a look at the main talking points.
Southgate gets the perfect response at Hampden
Putting in a downbeat display over the weekend as they eventually had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Ukraine out in Poland, it is fair to say that Southgate has come under some scrutiny over the past few days.
Crashing out of the World Cup at the quarter-final stage out in Qatar over the winter, England arrived at Scotland with the feel of a squad that is seeking a recent boost.
Despite dropping just a pair of points on what has been another European Championship qualifying romp this year, Southgate will take plenty of positive away from Tuesday’s eye-catching performance at Hampden.
Still yet to suffer a single defeat across any competition since opening 2023, the Three Lions would have been excited to silence what was a vocal home support in Glasgow.
Showing a real attacking intent here and causing Scotland a string of issues, Southgate’s men will be next seen when they welcome Australia to Wembley for another friendly showdown.
Bellingham steals the show in Glasgow
Making the blockbuster move to Spanish icons Real Madrid this summer in what could turn out to be a £100million deal, Bellingham has certainly skyrocketed himself into superstardom over the past few weeks.
Enjoying a remarkable start to life with Los Blancos and already playing a crucial role in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, the one-time Birmingham starlet now finds himself regarded as one of European football’s poster boys.
Bagging a last-minute winner for Madrid as the former La Liga champions snatched a 2-1 victory against Getafe prior to September’s international break, Bellingham has notched a stunning five goals in his opening four domestic showdowns for the European heavyweights.
Likewise, notching just his second senior strike for the Three Lions here, the 20-year-old is certainly living up to his tag as a generational talent.
Deployed in a more advanced role here and putting in another Man of the Match display in Glasgow, Bellingham also received a string of post-match praise from Southgate.
Scotland miss out on the chance to spring a famous upset
While Scotland might have eventually failed to claim a first win against their British rivals since way back in 1999, the Tartan Army will certainly still find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high.
Only continuing on what has been a remarkable purple patch since opening their European Championship qualifying adventure earlier in the year, Clarke’s side has been riding a stunning wave of momentum.
Winning each of their opening five qualifying appearances this year and marking their return to international duties over the weekend with a routine 3-0 romp away at Cyprus, the one-time Kilmarnock boss finds his side within touching distance of punching their ticket to Germany.
Although a draw between Norway and Georgia on Tuesday night might have been enough to secure a top-two finish in Group A, Scotland are just 90 minutes away from reaching back-to-back European Championships.
Despite suffering their first defeat at Hampden over the past 15 months here, this result shouldn’t dampen the mood in their camp.
