Ayr United were promoted to the Scottish First Division after coming from behind to beat Brechin City 2-1 in the second leg of Sunday’s play-off final.
Ayr finished the season in second place on the Division Two table, two points ahead of fourth-placed Brechin.
Brian Reid’s Ayr side had reached the final in some style, beating Forfar Athletic 7-4 on aggregate.
But they were held to a 1-1 draw in Wednesday’s first leg at home and trailed for much of the second half in the return fixture.
It was one of their own who did the damage a minute before half-time at Glebe Park.
An attempted back-pass from substitute Jonathan Tiffoney eluded goalkeeper Alan Martin, gifting hosts Brechin a 2-1 aggregate lead.
A second half of sustained pressure from the visitors would eventually pay dividends however, with Ayr captain Mark Roberts rounding Brechin goalkeeper Craig Nelson to level with 13 minutes remaining, making it 1-1 in the match and 2-2 on aggregate.
The final looked set for extra-time, before the dramatic intervention of centre-forward Michael Moffat, who struck a winner beneath Nelson with just two minutes remaining, securing promotion for Ayr and leaving the home fans devastated.
