Motherwell helped ease the pain of their 6-0 thumping by Rangers with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League on Tuesday.

Comprehensively outplayed at Ibrox on Saturday, Stuart McCall’s team did not have to wait long to gain some retribution, even though they needed to come from a goal down at Pittodrie.

Former Birmingham City trainee Sone Aluko put the Dons 1-0 up just three minutes into the match, but his strike was cancelled out 11 minutes later when one-time England striker Francis Jeffers scored his debut goal for Motherwell.

Aberdeen’s bid to get something from the game took a hit when captain Paul Hartley received a straight red card for lashing out at Keith Lasley in the 59th minute, and Motherwell eventually made their opponents pay when Scotland under-21 striker Jamie Murphy scored the winner on 71 minutes.

The goal moves Motherwell up to fifth on the table, while Aberdeen remain in ninth.
