St Johnstone beat Celtic in the Scottish Premier League for the first time since 1999 on Sunday, pulling off a stunning 1-0 upset at Celtic Park.
Derek McInnes’ men had banked just one point – and no goals – in three league matches this term heading into Sunday’s trip to Glasgow, but it did not stop them from showing up the Scottish powerhouse in their own backyard, with Dave MacKay scoring the winner on the hour mark.
MacKay volleyed home after Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster kept out Jody Morris’ powerful strike on goal for St Johnstone.
Earlier, Celtic’s Kris Commons missed an ideal chance to put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot, denied by St. Johnstone goalkeeper Peter Enckelman, who made up for conceding the spot kick in the first place.
It was Celtic’s first loss for the campaign, while St Johnstone’s first win of the season lifted them to four points from four games.
Champions Rangers went top of the league after Celtic’s slip-up, as they beat Motherwell 3-0 in the early kick-off.
Goals to Steven Naismith, Kyle Lafferty and Greg Wylde gave the visitors at Fir Park all three points, to send them top of the SPL, level with Motherwell on 10 points but with a game in hand.
Elsewhere, Kilmarnock and Hearts played out a 0-0 draw at Rugby Park, with the hosts registering their third draw in four matches.
