Portuguese media outlet A Bola is reporting that Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates will be staying at Sporting CP beyond the current season.
The 25-year-old joined the Lions in January on six-month loan with an option to buy, and he in turn enjoyed a bright start to his career in Primeira Liga.
Coates went on to start eight league fixtures and he appears to have done enough to impress the club officials.
With the Champions League qualification already in the bag, Sporting have decided to trigger the buy-out clause, rather than extending the loan deal for another year.
Coates is a player with serious international experience who quickly slotted into the starting line-up at Estadio Jose Alvalade, and the club bosses believe he can become a key player for the side in years to come.
Following the somewhat disappointing spell in England, the player himself will relish the opportunity to prove his worth in Portugal and Europe.
