With another stacked European schedule on our hands this weekend, we are treated to a string of heavyweight showdowns from across the continent. So, for those of you looking to chuck on a Saturday acca, we have found a trio of helpful tips that are worth keeping an eye out for.
Saturday, September 2nd
BST 14:30 Bayer Leverkusen vs Darmstadt
Eventually finishing last season 12 points adrift of booking what would have been a stunning Champions League ticket, Bayer Leverkusen have certainly come flying out of the traps this time around. Opening up the 2023/24 campaign with a stellar display on home soil as they landed a 3-2 victory against German giants RB Leipzig, Xabi Alonso’s men are riding a recent wave of momentum. Last seen storming their way to a routine 3-0 win away at Borussia Monchengladbach, Saturday’s hosts have quickly gained a reputation for their free-scoring performances in the final third. Along with signing off their pre-season preparations with an eye-catching 4-0 victory against Premier League outfit West Ham on August 5th, the one-time Liverpool midfielder will undeniably be smelling another golden chance here. Excited to make a return to the BayArena on Saturday afternoon, Leverkusen are rightfully tipped as a landslide contender here. Notching a trio of strikes in their back-to-back Bundesliga victories, Alonso’s men will be looking to cash in on a struggling Darmstadt. While the Lilies might have shocked many as they clinched a top-flight return last season, Torsten Lieberknecht’s side have failed to adjust to the huge step up in class. Last seen getting hit with a routine 4-1 drumming at home against Union Berlin, Saturday’s guests are still waiting to put a single Bundesliga point on the board. Shipping seven strikes in their last three meetings against Leverkusen, Darmstadt’s leaky defence faces a real challenge here.
Tip: Bayer Leverkusen to score in both halves @ 19/20
19:45 Napoli vs Lazio
Making major Serie A history last season as they got their hands on a first domestic crown since 1990, Napoli certainly gained a string of plaudits from across Italy. However, while the reigning champions might have endured a real transition this summer, the Blues certainly appear to be enjoying life under new boss Rudi Garcia. With the mood around the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona at a continued high, it is no secret that Saturday’s hosts have their sights set on defending their domestic title this time around. Last seen putting in another eye-catching display as they landed a routine 2-0 victory at home against Sassuolo, the former Lyon boss has seen his high-flying squad open up the 2023/24 campaign with back-to-back Serie A wins. Opening proceedings with a 3-1 win away at Frosinone on August 19th, Napoli will certainly be smelling the chance to make a heavyweight statement here. While Lazio might have clinched a hugely impressive silver medal finish last season, it is fair to say that Maurizio Sarri’s men have come crashing back down to earth. Opening the new campaign with a shock 2-1 loss away at Lecce, the one-time Chelsea boss does find some early pressure on his shoulders. Last seen putting in another worrying performance as they eventually suffered a 1-0 loss at home against Genoa, the Eagles will be more than aware that they face a huge challenge here. Losing four of their last five meetings against the defending champions, we are expecting a similar outcome on Saturday night.
Tip: Napoli win & Under 4.5 goals @ 1/1
20:00 Monaco vs Lens
Eventually left disappointed last season as they missed out on the chance to claim a Champions League return, Monaco are desperate to go one step further this time around. Opening the 2023/24 campaign with an action-packed 4-2 victory away at Clermont on August 13th, Adi Hutter’s side have collected seven points from their first three Ligue 1 showdowns. Forced to settle for a remarkable 3-3 stalemate away at Nantes last weekend, Saturday’s hosts will be desperate to claim an immediate boost here. Gaining a reputation for their lively outcomes on either side of the summer break, the former Eintracht Frankfurt boss will certainly be calling on his red-hot attacking talisman to spearhead his charge this weekend. Once again finding the net against Nantes last time out, Wissam Ben Yedder has already notched four goals from his opening three domestic showdowns. Continuing on from where he left off last season as he bagged 19 top-flight strikes, the 33-year-old will be looking to cash in on a struggling Lens. While Saturday’s guests might have made real history last season as they punched a famous Champions League ticket, Franck Haise’s men have failed to find a similar level this time around. Last seen getting hit with an action-packed 3-1 loss away at defending champions PSG, the one-time Lorient coach is still waiting for his squad to put a first Ligue 1 victory on the board. Likewise, signing off their pre-season preparations with a 3-1 defeat against Manchester United, Lens are seeking some much-needed defensive resolve.
Tip: Wissam Ben Yedder to score anytime @ 6/5
