Sergio Aguero shows his class in the Champions League

Manchester City were in desperate need of a victory in the Champions League against Bayern Munich last night.

It was a case of cometh the hour cometh the man, as City’s star striker Sergio Aguero fired home a hat-trick.

Difference

Sergio Aguero’s hat-trick was the difference between City being eliminated and still having a chance to progress into the knockout stages of the Champions League.

In fact Aguero has been the difference in City still being in the top four of the Premier League and struggling in midtable this season. The Citizens would be in major trouble without their diminutive forward.

Aguero has scored 43 per cent of City’s goals this season. The 26-year-old has now found the net 12 times in the Premier League and on five occasions in the Champions League. He is in red hot form and will be looking to continue that top form for the rest of the campaign.

Best

Sergio Aguero is one of the best finishers in world football, arguably alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The striker had the best goals to minute’s ratios in the Premier League last season. Aguero is the most clinical finisher in the English top-flight and maybe the world.

The striker has never received the same recognition as the Barcelona and Real Madrid stars, but that is maybe because he has never been able to play as many games as the La Liga-based pair. He also does not have the same class of teammates that Messi and Ronaldo have.

He has pace and power and when on form he seems to be unstoppable. Even the best defenders in the world struggle to stop the Argentine when he is on-form.

Not only does Sergio Aguero score goals, he scores big goals in the important games. He is no flat-track bully. Aguero does not just fill his boots full of goals against weak opposition. The Argentine is quite simply a match winner.

Fitness

For all his qualities as a player, he has an unfortunate knack of picking up injuries which has delayed his ascension to the top level of players.

He was regarded as a very good Premier League player, but because of injuries he could never string together enough games to prove that he was among the best in the world. It now looks like the Argentinian forward is fully-fit and he showed what he could do when fully-fit last night.

Records

If Aguero can stay fit this season then he could produce a very special campaign and has the potential to break the Premier League goalscoring record of 31 goals scored in a 38 game season, currently jointly-held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez.

It takes a player who is at the top of his game to finish top scorer in the Premier League. Aguero has the potential to hit the scoring heights of Suarez at Liverpool last season, despite his teammates seemingly being in inconsistent form.

Chance

Aguero’s goals have now given Manchester City a chance of progressing into the knockout stages. City are still bottom of Group E with a visit to Roma to come. Aguero and co. have to claim victory in the eternal city to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. The Citizens are currently odds of 10/11 to make it out of the group.

City’s future in the Champions League really is not secured just yet, but Aguero has at least put their participation in their own hands.

I certainly would not back against the diminutive Argentinian striker being the hero once again in Rome, as without him City are simply a shadow of the team they are with the dynamic Argentine international in their line-up.

Is Manchester City too reliant on Sergio Aguero?
