We’re approaching the start of the 2022/23 season in leagues across Europe. Over in Italy, AC Milan will be defending the Scudetto which they won for the 19th time in their illustrious history, and there will surely be challengers to defend it from. Inter Milan were the previous team to lift the title, and Juventus certainly won’t be too pleased about ending the season without it twice in a row for now.

So let’s take a brief look at what could happen in the Serie A over the next 10 months. The odds are all courtesy of Unibet, and let’s just say that it would appear we’re in for a proper title race.

Inter Milan – 7/4

The biggest story involving the Nerazzurri this summer is, of course, the return of Romelu Lukaku. Inter sold the Belgian striker to Chelsea for a reported fee of €115 million a year ago, only to sign him back on loan for the upcoming season. Having won the Scudetto with Inter before, Lukaku is certainly a big ace up their sleeve.

Transfers aside, coach Simone Inzaghi will want to prove just as capable of winning the title as Antonio Conte before him.

Juventus – 2

It feels as if the Old Lady are sometimes expected to win just because they dominated the Italian game completely until two years ago. In all honesty, Massimiliano Allegri faces a likely difficult task of managing his team without some notable names he’s used to relying on. Defender Giorgio Chiellini and forward Paulo Dybala have already left the club, and Matthijs de Ligt could be making his way to Bayern Munich in the coming days.

On the other hand, the club have confirmed the return of Paul Pogba on a free transfer from Manchester United, and it will be interesting to see what the 2018 World Cup winner can do to help the Bianconeri with all the experience he’s gathered since leaving for more than €100m in 2016.

AC Milan – 5/2

It’s not very often that the defending champions aren’t in the top two when it comes to these predictions, but there we are. William Hill are not the only bookmaker to see Inter and Juventus ahead when it comes to the 2022/23 Scudetto,  just as Inter are not the only Milan team to have signed a Belgian striker.

Divock Origi has joined the Rossoneri as a free agent after winning practically everything he could with Liverpool. At the age of just 27, there is still plenty to win, and it seems like the fierce competition in Liverpool’s attack, not to mention Jurgen Klopp’s preference to employ a ‘false nine’ upfront so far, hindered his chances of earning a regular starting spot at Anfield. With Zlatan Ibrahomovic set to turn 41 and Olivier Giroud 35, the situation will surely be different for Origi at San Siro.

Coach Stefano Pioli will surely be glad that the club have managed to sign Alessandro Florenzi, who was previously there on loan, on a permanent basis now. On the other hand, midfield powerhouse Franck Kessie has left to join Barcelona as a free agent, and his absence from the middle of the pitch is likely to be felt, as is that of Alessandro Romagnoli in the heart of defence.

Prediction

This race is not very likely to be won early. Even if one of these teams appears to run away with it for a while, the possibility of one or the other rival, or both for that matter, catching up cannot be disregarded. That’s at least the way we see things unfolding from this point in time.

But in the end, there can be only one winner, and we’ll go with Inter Milan.
