Genoa midfielder Alexander Merkel has explained that he is tempted by the reported interest from Werder Bremen.
The German midfielder has a contract until June 2016 at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, but it appears he is looking to return to the Bundesliga.
The 20-year-old is well aware of the interest from Werder Bremen and explains he would be delighted to join the Weserstadion outfit.
“Werder are a great club, a club with tradition,” the attacking midfielder was quoted as saying in Bild.
“With the exclusion of the last two seasons, they have always been fighting at the top.”
The youngster admits he is tempted by the prospect of playing in Bundesliga.
“Of course that Bundesliga is an option. The league has become more attractive. Full stadiums, great atmosphere, what more could you want?”
Merkel left VFB Stuttgart to join AC Milan as a 16-year-old and he made 6 Serie A appearances for the Rossoneri before signing for Genoa in a co-ownership deal.
The Rossoblu bought the remaining half of the player’s contract in May 2012, but then loaned the player back to Milan near the end of the season.
Merkel has quickly become disillusioned with life at Genoa after the team almost got relegated to Serie B and he could now be moving back to Bundesliga.
